COMPTON ENGINEERING, INC. AND THE CITY OF PASCAGOULA
RECONSTRUCTION OF HISTORIC LANDMARK WINS 2014 ACEC/MISSISSIPPI ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE AWARD
Flowood, Mississippi–The Mississippi Chapter of American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) recently recognized Compton Engineering, Inc. as the recipient of one of the annual Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA) in the category of Small Projects for their location, restoration, and reconstruction of the Round Island Lighthouse located in Pascagoula, Mississippi. Compton Engineering provided civil and structural engineering, surveying, project management, construction administration, construction observation, and permitting services for this one-of-a-kind project.
This Round Island Lighthouse, once a navigational beacon for seagoing vessels, has been resurrected and will now guide vacationers and lighthouse enthusiasts to the City of Pascagoula.
While the first phases of reconstruction, which included relocating the lighthouse, have been substantially completed, the City of Pascagoula continues its efforts to acquire funds to restore the interior stairs, electrical components, and architectural finishes of the lighthouse. There are also plans to develop a park of historical interest round the newly restored lighthouse.
It is an honor to be recognized by our peers in the engineering community. We are indebted to the various societies devoted to the preservation of lighthouses, the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, and local preservationists who listened to our story, responded to our needs, and provided valuable information. This is Compton’s fourth time to receive the coveted ACEC award. Compton Engineering, Inc. celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2013, with offices in Pascagoula, Biloxi, and Bay St. Louis
